Nonstoichiometry and Weyl fermionic behavior in TaAs

چکیده
The band structure of TaAs provides the necessary conditions for the emergence of Weyl fermions. Measurements verifying this fact are remarkably robust, given the reported levels of nonstoichiometry in typical single crystals. Here we demonstrate the surprising fact that a small degree of nonstoichiometry is essential for such observations in a wide range of temperatures. From first principles, we compute how crystal defects influence the position of the Fermi level relative to the so-called Weyl points, a key factor in allowing the detection of these particles. We show that observations of Weyl fermions depend crucially on nonstoichiometry and only occur within narrow ranges of elemental composition and temperature, indicating a considerable degree of fortuity in their discovery. Our approach suggests that in some cases the drive to produce ultra-pure crystals for measurements of exotic emergent phenomena may be misplaced.

New type of Weyl semimetal with quadratic double Weyl fermions.
Weyl semimetals have attracted worldwide attention due to their wide range of exotic properties predicted in theories. The experimental realization had remained elusive for a long time despite much effort. Very recently, the first Weyl semimetal has been discovered in an inversion-breaking, stoichiometric solid TaAs. So far, the TaAs class remains the only Weyl semimetal available in real mater...
متن کاملMesoscopic superconductivity and high spin polarization coexisting at metallic point contacts on Weyl semimetal TaAs
A Weyl semimetal is a topologically non-trivial phase of matter that hosts mass-less Weyl fermions, the particles that remained elusive for more than 80 years since their theoretical discovery. The Weyl semimetals exhibit unique transport properties and remarkably high surface spin polarization. Here we show that a mesoscopic superconducting phase with critical temperature Tc=7 K can be realize...
متن کاملA Weyl Fermion semimetal with surface Fermi arcs in the transition metal monopnictide TaAs class
Weyl fermions are massless chiral fermions that play an important role in quantum field theory but have never been observed as fundamental particles. A Weyl semimetal is an unusual crystal that hosts Weyl fermions as quasiparticle excitations and features Fermi arcs on its surface. Such a semimetal not only provides a condensed matter realization of the anomalies in quantum field theories but a...
متن کاملAnisotropic thermal transport in Weyl semimetal TaAs: a first principles calculation.
A fundamental understanding of the phonon transport property is crucial to predict the thermal management performance in micro/nano-electronic devices. By combining first principle calculations and Boltzmann phonon transport equation, we investigate thermal transport in TaAs-a typical Weyl semimetal. The lattice thermal conductivity of TaAs at room temperature was found to be 39.26 W mK(-1) and...
متن کاملSignatures of the Adler–Bell–Jackiw chiral anomaly in a Weyl fermion semimetal
Weyl semimetals provide the realization of Weyl fermions in solid-state physics. Among all the physical phenomena that are enabled by Weyl semimetals, the chiral anomaly is the most unusual one. Here, we report signatures of the chiral anomaly in the magneto-transport measurements on the first Weyl semimetal TaAs. We show negative magnetoresistance under parallel electric and magnetic fields, t...
